About Me:

The 'Becca' my classmates and peers know.

More accurate really.
I really like comics.  And by really like, I mean, I obsess over them.  So much so that when I graduated from the University of New Orleans in 2009, my first course of action was to apply to the Savannah College of Art and Design's Sequential Art Program, and give them my money as fast as they'd take it.  For a long time, I've dreamed of attending SCAD, and now that I'm here, I'm very satisfied with my choice.  The Sequential Art Department has been an excellent fit for me- for every novel in my apartment, I probably have four graphic novels.   Half of my tabs on Firefox are web comics, the other half are fashion bloggers.  I have shelves full of sketchbooks, and those are just the ones I've filled since moving here.

I've been drawing comics since I was fourteen (a late start, I know) and SERIOUSLY drawing comics since I was 22 (an even later start), but I've been writing prose since I was five, so that has to be some sort of saving grace.   There are a lot of weak points in my work, but I'm constantly striving to improve, and am happy to share my progress with other aspiring artists.   That's where this blog comes in.  Just about everything goes up- my process work, my finished comic pages, convention reviews, product reviews, and even tutorials as I learn the ropes of the materials I master.  Even my rejections are shared.

My aesthetic has been strongly influenced by manga and Disney (mostly Glen Keane, although there's some Mary Blair in there), but that doesn't mean I'm limited in my inspiration.  I read comics from a variety of genres, and am always looking for new suggestions.

I'm from New Orleans, Louisiana, and I have a few of the negative traits associated with the area.  I like seafood, I love spicy food, I know how to have a good time.  I can talk your ear off, and I wax nostalgic at the drop of a hat.  Unfortunately, beautiful Savannah is a 13 hour drive away from New Orleans, so I've had to learn how to make due here.   I'm very fortunate to have some amazingly talented friends who are both a source of inspiration and horrible jealousy.   Growing up in the rural deep south has instilled a love of nature and an appreciation for the untamed landscape that often pops up in my sketches, as well as an appreciation for architecture and detail.

I'm a workaholic and I update constantly, both on here and on my Twitter, which  is not only a social platform, but where I share drawings, links, and general shop talk.  I come from a family of educators, so instruction comes naturally to me.  My dream life consists of tutoring aspiring comic artists and paying the bills via comics.  This blog is a step towards both goals.  I attend a lot of conventions, most of which are located on the east coast, and try to offer at least one new item for every convention.  If you're in the area of my next con, you should definitely swing by, if only to say 'hello'.

I love feedback and strive to make this blog as useful to other comic hopefuls as possible.  If there's something I've done incorrectly or advice that is flat out awful, please let me know, I will amend it as soon as possible, and will gladly credit the source.

I believe that the comic community is only as good as we make it, and I strive to be supportive of other artists, particularly those who are interested in making a difference.

Art Trades: Open!  Please tweet, comment, or email me to start setting one up!  Right now, I am only interested in unsolicited pencil trades, but if I ask you, we can definitely work out something different, depending on what you're interested in.

Mission Statement

www.nattosoup.blogspot.com (Keep on Truckin, Nattosoup) is a blog intended for instruction and promotion. None of the illustrations or tutorials posted in this blog may be reposted elsewhere without my prior consent. Please do not contact me regarding pro bono work, if I am looking to volunteer my services, I will contact YOU. I am willing to do work for trade (publicity, products, services, ect), but this is at my discretion. If you are interested in trade, please email me at rhillbur at uno dot edu. The goal of this blog is to provide information that is either hard to find or non-existant. If there is a subject that I am qualified to cover, but have not done so yet, please let me know.

I highly value comment and critique, but I reserve the right to publish comments that are defamatory. I am not a representative of the Savannah College of Art and Design (or SCAD University for Creative Careers, whichever name they choose to go by), but I am a grad student of the Sequential Art Department, and tend to stay fairly busy within the department. My opinions do not reflect and are not endorsed by the Sequential Art Department or SCAD in general.  I am also a Podcast DJ on SEQAlab, the Sequential Art Department's unofficial official podcast that updates weekly during the semester.  For more information on SEQAlab, please visit their blog, or check them out on iTunes.

At this point in time, I am under no form of sponsorship. The materials that I test are purchased with my own money, and it is my right to choose what materials I will purchase. If you are interested in having me test your products, please contact me at rhillbur at uno dot edu. This is not an implication of endorsement, and all test results will be posted publicly to my blog.

The information provided in this blog may become outdated and may be subject to update at any time. I either amend the old entry, or make a new one and edit the old entry to link to the new entry. It is not my intention to misinform.

Comment Publication Policy:
I love hearing what you have to say, but for the benefit of this blog, and in service of my goal of providing a useful artistic resource for other comic artists, I feel like it's necessary to set forth some rules when it comes to commenting on this blog.

I moderate all comments. There, there's the disclosure. You wonder why there's never any spam comments? I weed them out. Comments that break these rules won't get posted. I have no problem with negative commentary, as long as it isn't intended to provoke. Long gone are my days of Livejournal wars, and I'd prefer to keep it this way. I am, however, an artist, and I do seek criticism. This blog is as much a work in progress as any comic I post, and if there's something you'd like to say in service of improvement, I'd love to hear it, and with your permission, I'd like to share it with the readers.  If you'd like to reach me privately, please use my email.

1. Comments that are insulting to other artists will be deleted. This blog isn't about drama.
2. Comments that include links to personal information regarding me or other artists will be deleted. Don't be a creeper.
3. Unsolicited comments that serve only to promote the commenter will be blocked.

If you're curious about my inspiration regarding these guidelines, you can read this article.
